When an ambulance starts to show its age, deciding what comes next can feel daunting. Many departments assume that once a chassis wears out, the only option is to buy a new ambulance. But that\u2019s not always the case.<\/p>\n

In fact, remounting\u2014the process of removing an existing patient module and installing it onto a new chassis\u2014can give a well-built ambulance a second life. For many services, it\u2019s a practical, cost-effective, and efficient way to keep trusted vehicles on the road.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the focus of the Remount and Service Center<\/em> in Elkhart, Indiana, which opened in the spring of 2025. Under the leadership of Matt Heflin, a 30-year veteran of the ambulance industry, the center specializes in factory-direct remounts for various ambulance brands.<\/p>\n

Why Consider a Remount?<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Heflin, the answer starts with how ambulances are built.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe modules are designed to outlast the chassis,\u201d he explains. \u201cWhen the cab and engine are worn out, the box often still has plenty of life left in it.\u201d<\/p>\n

By remounting, departments can extend that module\u2019s lifespan\u2014and factory warranty\u2014by another decade or more. Heflin estimates that a quality remount adds 10 to 15 years of usable service. That makes a big difference for departments balancing aging fleets, rising costs, and tight budgets.<\/p>\n

The financial savings are only part of the equation. A remount can also be completed in a fraction of the time it takes to build a new ambulance\u2014sometimes in as little as 30 to 45 days. And because the crews already know the layout, there\u2019s no learning curve once the vehicle returns to service.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s their same truck,\u201d Heflin says. \u201cSame storage, same setup. Just sitting on a new chassis and ready to be put back into service.\u201d<\/p>\n

How the Process Works<\/strong><\/p>\n

Once a vehicle arrives in Elkhart, Heflin\u2019s team starts with a thorough inspection. They look for potential safety issues, wear, or anything that needs attention before work begins. Each unit is tagged and tracked through three stages to make sure nothing is overlooked. Once the module receives the green light to begin the transformation, the team starts the remounting process based on the selected package.<\/p>\n

The facility offers three levels of remount options, allowing departments to choose the type of refurbishment that fits their budget and needs:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Reactivate (Package 1):
    \nThe \u201cpop and swap.\u201d Best for when the chassis is worn out or has been in an accident, but the module is in good shape\u2014fastest turnaround, typically 30\u201345 days.<\/li>\n
  2. Revive (Package 2):
    \nDesigned for older ambulances that need updates such as fresh paint, new flooring, and minor upgrades. A great mid-tier option for departments wanting a near-new look and feel.<\/li>\n
  3. Complete Refresh (Package 3):
    \nThe most comprehensive package, adding features like lighting upgrades, HVAC improvements, and interior refinishing. \u201cIt\u2019s not reinventing the wheel,\u201d Heflin says, \u201cbut it gives the truck a real facelift.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Departments can choose how much updating to do. Some prefer a straightforward chassis swap, according to Heflin, while others use the opportunity to make practical upgrades, such as new HVAC systems, LED lighting, or interior refinishing.<\/p>\n

    \u201cThe lights alone can make a big difference,\u201d Heflin notes. \u201cThose small touches can make it feel like a brand-new truck again.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Knowing When a Remount Makes Sense<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Not every ambulance is a good candidate for a remount. Heflin says the key factors are the module\u2019s age and condition. If it\u2019s structurally sound and under 12 years old, it\u2019s often a strong candidate.<\/p>\n

    \u201cIf the box has major structural damage or it\u2019s been remounted several times before, that\u2019s when I tell people they\u2019re probably better off starting fresh,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

    The chassis is usually what drives the decision. Depending on how often a truck runs calls, it might last anywhere from five to 10 years before needing replacement. Departments with heavy use, especially those with transport operations running 24\/7, wear through chassis faster than volunteer or rural services.<\/p>\n

    Built to Be Remounted<\/strong><\/p>\n
