What is an ambulance type?
An ambulance type refers to how an ambulance is configured and built. It is more about the vehicle’s chassis and body style.
There are 3 different ambulance types: Type I, Type II, and Type III.
How do I select the right ambulance type for my organization?
Choosing between a Type I and Type III ambulance ultimately comes down to your operational needs, including your preferred chassis, interior space, and overall fleet requirements. The best way to determine the right fit is to connect with your local Crestline dealer, who can walk you through the options and recommend the configuration that aligns with your goals and budget.
What is a Type I ambulance?
A Type I ambulance is built on a truck chassis for heavy-duty use and is available with a 4×4 option, providing the durability and off-road capability necessary for challenging environments. There is a separation between the cab and the patient compartment.
We offer the CCL 150 model in a Type I configuration.
What is a Type II ambulance?
This is a van-style ambulance; it does not have a separate box or patient care module. The patient care area is in the back of the van. It is smaller and more fuel-efficient than a Type I or Type III, making it ideal for hospital transport or urban settings.
We do not offer a Type II ambulance in our model lineup. However, our partner brand, Demers Ambulances, does.
What is a Type III ambulance?
A Type III ambulance is built on a cutaway van chassis, meaning there’s no solid wall separating the cab from the patient compartment. This open design enhances communication between the driver and crew, facilitating faster coordination, easier handoffs, and improved awareness during transport.
We offer the CCL 150 and CCL 166 models in a Type III configuration.
Does the type of ambulance affect lead times for delivery?
Ambulance type can influence delivery timelines, primarily due to the availability of chassis. For example, specific Type I or Type III chassis may be in higher demand or more limited supply, which can impact production schedules.
That said, Crestline’s streamlined production process is designed to keep projects moving efficiently and help ensure your new ambulance is delivered on time. Your local Crestline dealer can provide the most accurate lead time estimate based on your chosen type and chassis.
Does the type of ambulance impact overall cost?
Yes. Type I ambulances are generally more expensive because they are built on a heavy-duty truck chassis and often include four-wheel drive (4×4) capability, which adds durability and off-road performance. Type III ambulances, built on a cutaway van chassis, are typically more cost-effective while still providing ample space and functionality.
Your local Crestline dealer can provide a detailed quote and help you compare costs based on the configuration that best fits your fleet.
Do all Crestline ambulances come equipped with the same standard features, regardless of type?
Yes. Regardless of type, every Crestline ambulance comes equipped with standardized features, ensuring consistent performance, safety, and value across your fleet.
We encourage you to visit our Crestline Features page to learn more about these features.
